⥉ PREPARING FOR SUCCESS

Making the Most of Troop Meetings

All Scouts are expected to join Troop meetings at the Log Cabin on the 2nd and 4th Wednesday of each month, from 7:00 until 8:30. Please remember to be on time and always bring your Scout Book!

 

During the meeting, guardians can leave but are welcome to stay. It’s useful to mark these dates on the calendar to ensure scouts don't miss the meetings. Please always check your email for updates.

Attending these mettings will help ensure their scounts can sign up for upcoming adventurs and work on skills to make progress in ranking up to the next level.

Scouts should attend meetings in their full class A uniform.

​

We believe that Scouting should be available and accessaible to everyone. Scholarships are available to help defer any costs as needed.

Regular Troop Meetings

2nd and 4th Wednesday every month

7pm-8:30pm

at: The Log Cabin in San Anselmo

 

Patrol Leader Committee (PLC)

Scout leaders also meet on the 3rd Wednesday of every month in addition to regular Troop meetings

⥉ PARENT PARTICIPATION

Volunteering With The Troop

While the Troops are youth-lead organizations (and you’ll see this come into play as the Scout leadership runs meetings), our Scouts are assisted by adult leaders. Unlike Cub Scouts, the Scout adult leaders are there to guide the Scouts but not to do the work for them. For example, on campouts, Scouts are responsible for cooking, setting up camp, and deciding in general what activities they would like to do over the course of the year.

 

At Troop meetings, Scouts do not need to have an Adult Partner as they did in Cub Scouts, though we adhere to the “2 Deep” leadership philosophy of having a minimum of 2 adults at each Scout function and parents/guardians are always welcome to observe the Troop activities.

 

If you are interested in helping the Troop as an adult leader, we’d certainly appreciate your assistance. You could be an Assistant Scoutmaster (ASM) a member of the Troop Committee, or a chaperone for an event. ASMs work directly with the Scouts while Committee members help out in staff-type positions (e.g. Treasurer, Secretary, etc.). 

Adult Registration

In order for parents or guardians to attend trips and activities, they need to be registered adults with our Troop.

Here are the steps to register:

  1. Please set up a my.scouting.org account.

  2. Complete mandatory BSA Youth Protection Training (YPT) here. Click on the box that says New to Scouting. Once you finish the training, please send Jennifer a PDF of the certificate.  Sometimes it takes 24 hours to be able to download it.

  3. Register as an Adult for Troop 15 here.

  4. All California adult volunteers are required to take the State of CA Mandated Reporter Training. Please take the training here. Please send Jennifer the certificate once you receive it or can download it. Please also upload it here.

  5. Adult volunteers are also required to do a one-time Live Scan Fingerprinting. Please take THIS FORM to UPS and local police stations that offer this service.  Please call before you go to make sure they are set up to do it.  UPS in Montecito Plaza in San Rafael and Marin County sheriff’s office.  But again, you need to call first.

  6. Complete the BSA medical forms. Parts A, B1, and B2, immunizations, and a copy of both sides of your insurance card.  Please bring this complete to the next meeting.

  7. To attend Scout events lasting over 72 hours, a physical with your doctor is required. Please use this Continuing Medical Release and Permission Slip form. Print and bring to the next troop meeting.

What Your Scout Needs

Uniforms

Scouts wear the full field uniform (Class A) unless told otherwise. The activity uniform (Class B) is only worn when specifically permitted for an outing.

Uniforms, patches, etc. can be purchased at the Marin Council Trading Post in San Rafael. The store clerk will let you know which shirt and patches are needed for your Scout. 

Gear

There may be additional needs for specific trips, but all scouts should bring the Scout Essentials on EVERY outing.

Always ask if you need something. Many families have spare camping items. You and your scout can test out the options. Lightweight backpacking gear can get very pricey. We have plenty to share before you commit to gear. We can direct you to tested and trusted lower cost versions online if you are interested.

  1. Pocket Knife

  2. First Aid Kit

  3. Water Bottle / Hydration Pack 

  4. Sun Protection: Sunblock, sun hat, sun shirts that block the sun’s rays

  5. Rain Gear: Every scout should always have access to lightweight packable rain jacket and pants

  6. Extra clothing, including:

    • A layering system that allows you to stay comfortable by adding or removing clothes as the weather changes

    • Warm Jacket (synthetic fleece recommended)

    • Lightweight packable rain jacket and rain pants (Frogg Toggs has inexpensive options)

    • Non cotton moisture wicking clothing (cotton dries too slowly and can become dangerous in some situations)

    • Packable winter jacket in for cold-weather outings

    • Wool hiking socks

    • Waterproof hiking boots

  7. Headlamp or flashlight (with extra batteries)

  8. Emergency trail food (non perishable)

  9. Waterproof matches and firestarters (once your scout earns their Fireman’s Chit)

  10. Compass (and map)

  11. Mess kit

  12. Zero degree light weight sleeping bag + a sleeping pad

Also commonly needed: 

  • Ultralight 2 person tent (not needed immediately as Scouts share tents)

  • Lightweight backpacking stove and cookpot

  • ​
